Have a test coming up?

Try some of these study tips from your OA teachers:

Write It!  Rewrite your notes/vocabulary words using a different color for each fact/word.

Get Moving!  Infinity Walk:  walk in a figure-8 as someone asks your questions or as you read.

Stay alert by eating crunch foods, chewing gum, tapping your foot or pencil, or listening to low upbeat music.

Study in a comfortable, well-lit place.

Take breaks - come back to it if frustrated.

(Mrs. Hahn)

Make up a song with the facts you have to memorize and use a familiar tune!

(Mrs. Rodgers)

Are you a VISUAL LEARNER (learn best when you see things)?

  • Take Notes!  It connects the visual requirement with what is heard
  • Flashcards!  When trying to remember facts - Write both the questions & answers on note cards.  Use to flash in spare moments
  • Highlighters!  Create a color code system & use on critical information
  •  Visualize.  Creat mental pictures and mental movies to aid in memorization
  • Study in a quiet place, away from visual & auditory (sight and sound) distractions - you CAN NOT listen to the radio or TV
  • When listening to a lecturer, sit where you can clearly see the person, their body language & facial expressions - also helps to avoid other visual distractions

Are you a KINESTHETIC LEARNER (learn best when doing)?

  • When reading, pick up the book.  Walk around while reading
  • Take notes. For the tactile sensation of writing
  • Spend extra time in labs - you learn by doing!
  • Use the computer.  The act of typing or moving a mouse while looking up information engages your sense of touch
  • When learning a procedure, make flashcards for each step.  Put them in order until sequence become automatic!
  • Play audio tapes while exercising
  • To aid in memorization, use rhythm (beats)
  • Study on an exercise ball, instead of stationary chair
  • Use a stress ball when you are required to sit still and squeeze
  • For the toe tappers, take off your shoes so as not to distract others
  • Background noise is okay - can listen to the radio or TV

Are you an AUDITORY LEARNER (learn best when listening)?

  • Explain information to someone else as if you were a tutor - information gets into your own ears
  • Read aloud
  • Tape lectures
  • Engage in class discussions & debates
  • Use verbal analogies & story telling to demonstrate your points
  • Create musical jingles to assist in memorization
  • When learning new information, state the problem out loud and reason through out loud
  • Go over important facts out loud.  Make up rhymes & repeat to remember!
  • Stay away from noise (auditory distractions!)  You can not study while listening to the radio or TV

(Mrs. Glidden)
