Have a test coming up? Try some of these study tips from your OA teachers: Write It! Rewrite your notes/vocabulary words using a different color for each fact/word. Get Moving! Infinity Walk: walk in a figure-8 as someone asks your questions or as you read. Stay alert by eating crunch foods, chewing gum, tapping your foot or pencil, or listening to low upbeat music. Study in a comfortable, well-lit place. Take breaks - come back to it if frustrated. (Mrs. Hahn) Make up a song with the facts you have to memorize and use a familiar tune! (Mrs. Rodgers) Are you a VISUAL LEARNER (learn best when you see things)? -
Take Notes! It connects the visual requirement with what is heard -
Flashcards! When trying to remember facts - Write both the questions & answers on note cards. Use to flash in spare moments -
Highlighters! Create a color code system & use on critical information -
Visualize. Creat mental pictures and mental movies to aid in memorization -
Study in a quiet place, away from visual & auditory (sight and sound) distractions - you CAN NOT listen to the radio or TV -
When listening to a lecturer, sit where you can clearly see the person, their body language & facial expressions - also helps to avoid other visual distractions Are you a KINESTHETIC LEARNER (learn best when doing)? -
When reading, pick up the book. Walk around while reading -
Take notes. For the tactile sensation of writing -
Spend extra time in labs - you learn by doing! -
Use the computer. The act of typing or moving a mouse while looking up information engages your sense of touch -
When learning a procedure, make flashcards for each step. Put them in order until sequence become automatic! -
Play audio tapes while exercising -
To aid in memorization, use rhythm (beats) -
Study on an exercise ball, instead of stationary chair -
Use a stress ball when you are required to sit still and squeeze -
For the toe tappers, take off your shoes so as not to distract others -
Background noise is okay - can listen to the radio or TV Are you an AUDITORY LEARNER (learn best when listening)? -
Explain information to someone else as if you were a tutor - information gets into your own ears -
Read aloud -
Tape lectures -
Engage in class discussions & debates -
Use verbal analogies & story telling to demonstrate your points -
Create musical jingles to assist in memorization -
When learning new information, state the problem out loud and reason through out loud -
Go over important facts out loud. Make up rhymes & repeat to remember! -
Stay away from noise (auditory distractions!) You can not study while listening to the radio or TV (Mrs. Glidden)
