Immunization Exemption FAQ

Dear Oakfield-Alabama School Community Members:
We understand that there have been several questions recently regarding the process for immunization medical exemptions. We have developed a dedicated FAQ page for your information and have included some of the most frequently asked questions below:
Q: Should the District accept a medical exemption form without any further review?
A: No. If the medical exemption form does not specify the immunization, the specific contraindication/precaution, and the date the exemption ends then the form must be reviewed and additional information obtained.
Q: May a school nurse access immunization records of students living in the District?
A: Yes. The NYS Department of Health controls which records a district has access to. The school nurse is permitted by regulation to view those records and to run reports using those records.
Q: Does the Board of Education have the authority to overturn the decision to deny a medical exemption request?
A: No.
Q: Does the Board of Education hire an attorney to keep students out of school once a decision to deny the medical exemption request is made?
A: No.
