What is MTSS?
A Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a proactive and preventative framework that integrates data and instruction to maximize student academic achievement and support students social, emotional and behavioral needs from a strengths based perspective.

AIS (Academic Intervention Services)

(As noted above, OA uses the acronym MTSS when referring to both academic and SEL/behavioral support systems)

 

The NYS Education Department mandates that all schools provide AIS which supplements the general curriculum instruction to assist students in meeting the New York State learning standards.  Students who have been identified as being at risk of not gaining the knowledge and skills needed to meet or exceed the performance level on state assessments qualify for AIS support.  (See documentation above for how OA makes determinations of support.)

 

In grades K-8, this support includes additional academic support in reading and math that is provided during the school day.  Students receiving academic intervention support are not taken out of their regularly scheduled classes, instead they are provided support during grade wide MTSS periods (K-5) or during office hours and/or study halls (6-8). 

 

In grades 9-12, additional academic support is provided to  students that have yet to pass required Regent-level courses in math, ela, social studies and/or science. This additional support may take place during an assigned learning center or AIS period, during Office Hours or study hall, or may occur directly in the classroom through individualized instruction.
